Some coaches leave their mark in wins and statistics. Others leave it in the players they develop, the culture they help establish, and the direction they help push a program.
Coach Chris Burns did both.
Serving as Offensive Coordinator during the Dubuque Miners’ second season, Coach Burns helped lead an offense that became a major part of one of the most important years in the young history of the organization.
The Miners entered 2026 looking to take a significant step forward. After finishing 1–7 the previous season, Year Two was about proving that the foundation being built in Dubuque could turn into something real.
Under Coach Burns, the Miners offense produced 242 points, averaging 30.25 points per game. The unit developed into an offense capable of creating explosive plays, putting points on the board and giving the Miners an opportunity to compete every week.
That production helped fuel an incredible turnaround as Dubuque finished 8–3 overall, 6–2 in the MWUF and earned a trip to the postseason.
But Coach Burns’ impact cannot be measured by 242 points alone.
He brought preparation, football knowledge and a genuine investment in the players he coached. He helped develop an offensive identity while working with players from different backgrounds, experience levels and walks of life. At this level of football, coaches and players balance the game with careers, families and responsibilities outside the facility. Chris understood that while still expecting his players to prepare, compete and continually improve.
He helped raise the standard.
And now, the next chapter of his coaching career is beginning.
Following his time leading the Miners offense, Coach Burns has advanced into the professional arena football game, accepting the position of Head Coach of the Cedar Rapids Titans of American Indoor Football (AIF).
For the Dubuque Miners, seeing a coach take the next step means something.
Part of building a successful organization is creating an environment where players and coaches can develop, prove themselves and earn opportunities beyond Dubuque. Coach Burns’ advancement represents exactly that.
We are proud that a piece of his journey came through the Dubuque Miners, and we’re even more proud to see where that journey is taking him next.
The statistics will always be part of the story.
242 points.
30.25 points per game.
An 8–3 season.
A playoff appearance.
But Coach Burns’ greatest contribution may be that he helped show what this program could become.
He helped build something.
And now he gets the opportunity to build again, this time as a professional Head Coach.
Congratulations, Coach Burns. Once a Miner, always a Miner.
Built by the Community. Held to the Gold Standard. Dubuque Always.
